Reproductive rights in Nepal
Nepal had one of the most severe abortion laws in the world; imprisoning women who had the procedure and doctors who carried them out. It was illegal even where the woman’s life was at risk. In 2002, abortion was legalised in certain circumstances: up to 12 weeks gestation, or 18 weeks for those who have been the victims of rape or incest. It is also available at any time where the pregnancy poses a risk to the life of the woman. However, by 2014 many women were still unaware of the legal status of abortion and almost half of all abortions were carried out by untrained providers or induced by the women themselves.
